What is MCT?

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are a unique group of saturated fatty acids rarely distributed in traditional plant oils and more commonly found in fresh coconuts. Lauric, caprylic and capric acid are primarily found in virgin coconut oil, whereas MCT oil is concentrated with capric and caprylic acid alone (no lauric). Capric and caprylic acid are unique fatty acids, providing well-sustained energy.

MCT Oil Benefits and Side Effects

Benefits:

  • Weight loss and weight management as it increases fat burning potential with capric and caprylic acid.
  • Mental Focus and Clarity as it is considered fuel for your brain, supplying a highly absorbable and efficient source of energy.
  • Assists in regulating blood sugar levels by simulating a satiety effect and supplying energy to cells when glucose, the body’s primary source of energy, is limited
  • Assists in building performance and endurance during exercise as MCTs are immediately transported to the liver where they are rapidly utilized for energy

Side Effects:

It makes you “go”.  You need to start with a small dosage (1/2 teaspoon) and eventually work your way up to 3 tablespoons a day.  If you take too much too soon, you will have severe abdominal cramping.

Where Can You Buy MCT Oil

MCT oil can be purchased in some local supplement stores, but I had to do a lot of running around to find some.  All of the above mentioned MCT oils can be found on this page of Amazon.

So What is the Best Brand of MCT Oil

If you want certified organic MCT oil, then you have a choice of these brands.  If you are okay with non-certified, but the oil comes from  sustained coconut oil then you have a larger pool of offerings to choose from (click here).

Then you want brands that do not have palm oil added to the MCT – just pure MCT oil, then these brands are your best choice.

MCT Oil vs Coconut Oil

If MCT oil is derived from coconut oil, why not just use coconut oil as it is cheaper?  Well… coconut oil contains other components such as lauric which has other properties (such as antibacterial).

How to You Store MCT Oil?

Your MCT oil should be kept at room temperature.  Do not put it in the fridge.
